Ceraunius Tholos Volcano, Mars

Ceraunius Tholos Volcano, Mars - mars, planet, space, volcano

Wallpaper Description:
HRSC mosaic of the Martian shield volcano Ceraunius Tholus. This volcano measures about 130 km from end to end and stands about 5.5 km above the surrounding Tharsis highlands. The nature of the large canyons that run from the central caldera into the crater at top left are unknown. One possibility is that it represents a large fissure in the mountain that channeled lava downslope. Another possibility is that heating caused the catastropic melting of an ice cap on the mountain during warmer, wetter times.

Dominant Gases

Mars

CO2 96%
Nitrogen 1.9%
Oxygen 0.174%
Argon 1.9%

Earth

CO2 0.0391%:):)
Nitrogen 78.1%
Oxygen 20.9%
Argon 0.93%

Because Mars atmosphere is 96% carbon dioxide, any plants would blossom if they existed. All they are missing is a source of water.

While 78.1% of Earth’s atmosphere is nitrogen, Mars is only 1.9% nitrogen-based. Earth is rich in oxygen (20.9%). But we can only find trace amounts of oxygen on Mars. Other than trace gases, argon comprises 1.9% of Mars’ atmosphere.
