IMHO, the LGM's (Little Grey Men) are genetically-hybrid robotic entities 'programmed' to perform specific tasks in a hostile environment; i.e., Earth!

I know it sounds equally nutz, but, again, IMHO, these 'alien entities' do not travel in space so much as they do in time! As they transition into another dimension, the behavior of their vehicles seems erratic, but only because we're observing them from our time frame.

When they complete their transition to another dimension, they disappear entirely from ours. But I digress.
